The city of Enschede was a late bloomer and, partly due to various disasters, Enschede has relatively few existing historic buildings. However, this does not mean that nothing is left at all, if you take a good look around the city you will discover some history.

Enschede has had three major city fires, in particular the fire in 1862 which destroyed almost the entire city. This was not an easy time for Enschede during the Second World War. The Allies thought they were bombing a German city, but this later turned out to be Enschede.

Nature & Parks in Enschede



If you want to relax in Enschede, you can do so in various parks. In the vicinity of the center you can go to the Volkspark, Bledensteinpark, or the wooldrikspark. They are not parks of a great standard, but you can relax there. For a beautiful nature reserve, you have to travel a bit to, for example, the Sallandse Heuvelrug near Nijverdal or just across the border to Germany for the Ambtsvenn or the Gildehauser Venn.
