The river IJssel used to be of great importance for the Hanseatic, which ensured a lot of prosperity, you can still see this clearly in the prosperous Hanseatic cities such as Deventer, Zwolle and Kampen. In other provinces there are also Hanseatic cities to find.

ALMELO

Almelo is located in the east of Overijssel in the region of Twente. The city, which received city rights in 1420, is located on the Almelose Aa brook. Almelo was founded in the 11th century, at a crossroads of land and waterways and became a real textile city. Part of the name Almelo also comes from the name of the stream, "lo" is a forest on the sandy plain, so the "Aa" and the "lo" together make the name Almelo. A translation of the name is therefore a forest on a sandy plain on the Aa. Almelo is an old city that has a lot to offer, when visiting Twente Almelo should certainly not be missed.

BLOCK SIDE

Blokzijl is a small fortified town with a very cozy and friendly atmosphere. The monumental buildings, various catering establishments and the harbor make Blokzijl absolutely worth a visit. The 17th century buildings give Blokzuil a very urban atmosphere.

However beautiful and cozy this fortress town is, it is a small town and you don't have to spend a lot of time on it.

DEVENTER

Deventer is a very cozy old Hanseatic city, Deventer is located on the river IJssel in the province of Overijssel. The cozy atmosphere is mainly because Deventer is one of the five oldest cities in the Netherlands, and usually a historic atmosphere of a city gives a lot of fun.

A city trip to Deventer is for everyone, Deventer has a lot to offer. You can go shopping, see beautiful monuments and go to museums and you name it

Enschede

Enschede is basically an old city, although the city nowadays focuses more on a shopping city, living city, music city and knowledge city. So a modern city with many activities and a vibrant life. Enschede is the largest city in the province of Overijssel and also a student city, so Enschede can call itself a vibrant city.

GIETHOORN

In the north-west of the province of Overijssel is the small village of Giethoorn, but a very touristic village with worldwide fame and even a square on the game board of the world edition of Monopoly.
Giethoorn, also called the Venice of the North because the village is car-free and the houses can be reached by boat. The many canals and bridges give a relaxing feeling, even though it is always busy with walking and sailing tourists.

STRUGGLING

Do you want to get away from it all, but not to a very famous city? Then discover camps, Kampen is a small Hanseatic city and is located in the province of Overijssel. Kampen is a tourist town, but it is actually not well known. That's actually a shame, because Kampen has a lot to offer. There are many places of interest in Kampen, including many city gates. Kampen is also a small shopping town.

TWO

Zwolle is a beautiful historic city and is also a Hanseatic city. Zwolle is the capital of the province of Overijssel and has over 120.000 inhabitants, it is definitely worth a visit. You can enjoy a nice drink on one of the many pleasant terraces.
