In the Netherlands we have many fortified towns, so many that it is impossible to list them all here. Asperen probably originated in Roman times and the city received its city rights around 1314. Asperen is a cozy fortified town next to Leerdam, in Asperen you can still find part of the city wall from the past. There is also a fortress to visit in Asperen. |

Brouwershaven

|
Brouwershaven is a city in the province of Zeeland, which was founded in 1285. After the year 1590 the city was fortified by city walls and a moat around it. Much of the defenses were lost during the storm surge in 1682. A small part of the city walls are still visible and the city is still very atmospheric. |

Buren is a cozy fortified town in the province of Gelderland and was founded in 1395. In neighbors you really experience the atmosphere that belongs to a fortified city, with wall, ramparts, moat and another city gate. |

Heusden
|
|
Heusden is an incredibly well restored fortified town in the province of North Brabant, on the Bersche Maas. It is not entirely clear which year, but in the 13th century Heusden received its city rights. In Heusden you will find everything you expect in a fortified city, city walls, city gates and ramparts in star shape. |

Woudrichem
|
|
Woudrichem is a nice historic fortified town in North Brabant. Around 1583, the city built its defenses. You can still see a lot of the fortress on the star-shaped city walls, the prison gate and parts of the city wall. |
