Sittard is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands and therefore worth a visit to view historic buildings. Part of the Markt is a protected cityscape and the city also has many monuments. You can best call Sittard a church city with no fewer than five churches together in the city center.

Sittard did have a disaster year, the year 1677 was a real disaster year for Sittard. After 1668, the French king Louis XIV made many attempts to possess Dutch territories, especially the cities in the south of Limburg were a major target of Louis XIV. In the year 1676, the French invaded Sittard and looted Sittard for three days, blown up the city gates and filled in the canals. On August 22, 1677, the French returned, wanted a lot of money and burned hundreds of houses. Then thought it was over less than two weeks later the French returned, monasteries and more houses were set on fire. The city was left in ruins and looted, two monasteries and some 70 houses were spared. After the 'Peace of Nijmegen' (1678) the French left the area and Sittard was rebuilt a bit, but it never completely got over it.
