Summary of Rotterdam
The New Market in Rotterdam
Rotterdam is the largest port city in the Netherlands and has approximately 620.000 inhabitants. The city is one of the most striking cities in the Netherlands, due to its striking high-rise buildings. The city dates back to the year 1200, but because of the Second World War, little of this can be seen in the city center. This makes the city no less attractive.
Interesting history of Rotterdam
The First Skyscraper of Rotterdam
Unfortunately, because of the bombardment of the city center during the Second World War, little of the old city center remains. Beautiful striking buildings from the past that remain are the St. Laurenskerk, the building of the Holland-America Line and the town hall.
Rotterdam Landmarks
The Old Wine Bridge in Rotterdam
If you want to spend a little more time exploring the city, leave the center to find the so-called fire boundary. When the city center was bombed during the Second World War, the city center went up in flames, but many suburbs were spared. On May 14, 2010, the entire fire boundary was permanently marked with red lamps in the ground. Outside this border you can still find nostalgic neighborhoods such as the Bospolder/Tussendijken, or the area around the Kralingse plas (Kralingen district).
Shopping in Rotterdam
The Koopgoot of Rotterdam
Rotterdam is ideal for shopping, the new city center has expanded enormously in terms of shops and you can find all kinds of things. Many hours can be spent in shopping streets and passages for the center. One of the most important shopping spots is the so-called 'koopgoot' in the center of the city, you can hardly avoid it because it belongs to the city center. The 'sales gutter' runs down stairs, where the shops are somewhat sunken into the ground, as can be seen in the photo opposite.

In the center of Rotterdam, near the Euromast, there is a park called “Het Park” and another museum park near the Boijmans museum. A little to the northeast of the center you will find the Kralingse Bos, a beautiful large park where you can rest, swim, sunbathe, etc. You can go even further north of the city, where there are several larger parks.
Furthermore, Rotterdam is located in the most densely built-up area in the Netherlands and you can move to Wassenaar or the Oostvoorne area to walk in the dunes along the sea.
