Tower facade of the former Sacred Heart Church on the Arendstraat in Oosterhout The tourist town of Oosterhout has many historical highlights. The city received its city rights in the year 1809, but the town had existed for much longer. Objects have been found that date from Prehistory. This brings us to the Stone Age/Bronze Age, when several burial mounds were found. The oldest fields of Oosterhout stem from the early Middle Ages, these are the years 500 – 1000. In the year 700 Oosterhout fell under the bishopric of Liège, around the year 800 the bishop's seat went to Liège for good. A special discovery was made during the excavation at the current market of Oosterhout, here archaeologists have found 5 houses dating from the 8th century, with this discovery Oosterhout is one of the older settlements of Brabant. The first stone church was probably built around the year 1050, this church was greatly expanded in 1125 because the first church had become too small. Oosterhout got its name in the year 1213, then the city did not yet have city rights, these came as mentioned earlier in the year 1809 and these were distributed by Lodewijk Napoleon. Strijen Castle was built in the year 1288, it was destroyed in the 15th century, but there is still a remnant of that castle. In the year 1625 the Sint Jan was set on fire, this was done by the state army of Spain, in the year 1806 Lodewijk Napoleon is in Oosterhout for the first time. | |||||||||||||
