Lemmer is a cozy and touristic place in the south of the province of Friesland. Due to its location, the place is the welcome picture of Friesland, both from the IJsselmeer and from the mainland through the A6, the province is easily accessible via Lemmer.

Lemmer is a busy tourist resort in the summer. The village has a central function for southern Friesland and the northern part of the province of Flevoland. Partly due to tourism, there are many terraces to be found in Lemmer, especially along the canal 't Dok and the inner harbor.

Lemmer is an old town, the place name was mentioned as early as the beginning of the 14th century, but under other names even earlier. Due to its location on the former Zuiderzee, many wars were fought over Lemmer. With a fleet of 146 ships, Lemmer became one of the most important fishing towns in the Netherlands, but little is left of this because of the polder and the Afsluitdijk.

The town of Lemmer still has some nice old buildings, but not in large numbers, partly because Lemmer is only a small town with about 10.000 inhabitants. Some nice sights are 'De Wildeman', the 'Hervormde kerk', the 'Sint-Willibrorduskerk' and the nice buildings on the canal 't Dok.

Lemmer has a central function for the area and partly because of this, shops are located in Lemmer. Although not in great numbers, there are a number of clothing stores and shops for the bare necessities of life. A somewhat more extensive shopping place in the area is Heerenveen (>25km)

Lemmer Beach

In Lemmer you can easily visit a museum, go to a tropical garden, watch a theater performance or go to a cinema in the area. In addition, Lemmer is very suitable for many different types of water sports which are well present in Lemmer.

The Reformed Church of Lemmer

Lemmer is extremely suitable for water sports because of its location on the IJsselmeer. Partly due to this location, you can enjoy a lovely walk along the beach in Lemmer, bordered by the IJsselmeer.

Towards the west of Lemmer you can go to the forest in Gaasterland and to the south-west of Lemmer the Kuinderbos. In these forests you can relax, enjoy cycling or walking.

Nightlife in the Langestreek, Lemmer

In Lemmer you can sit on a terrace or go to a cafe, but it is better not to go to Lemmer to go out. An alternative to divert to is Sneek,(>26km) this town is located north of Lemmer.
