Almelo is located in the east of Overijssel in the region of Twente. The city, which received city rights in 1420, is located on the Almelose Aa brook. Almelo was founded in the 11th century, at a crossroads of land and waterways and became a real textile city. Part of the name Almelo also comes from the name of the stream, "lo" is a forest on the sandy plain, so the "Aa" and the "lo" together make the name Almelo. A translation of the name is therefore a forest on a sandy plain on the Aa. Almelo is an old city that has a lot to offer, when visiting Twente Almelo should certainly not be missed.

Almelo was founded in the 11th century, you can still see that the city is old when you walk through the center. Almelo already existed in the Middle Ages, but only had a moat, no wall or gates and therefore had no military function. The most important building of the city used to be from “Huis Almelo”.

Some must-see sights are:
House Almelo, originally owned by the Van Rechteren Limpurg family and still owned by the same family today. In the past, justice was spoken, nowadays the family is involved in maintaining old buildings in the city center and maintaining the forests that are owned by the family.The Waag on the Waagplein, this dates from the year 1914 and is therefore the last built Waag building in the Netherlands. The Waag mainly served as a market hall, later the City Museum Almelo moved into the building and today it houses fashion shops.

The Old ChurchThe choir of the church dates from 1493 and is the oldest piece of building in Almelo, the rest of the church dates from 1738.
