![]() The Old Watermill in Valkenburg Valkenburg is a small but very cozy and very touristy fortified town. Valkenburg is located in the very south of the country, in the south of the province of Limburg. In Valkenburg you will find a different architectural style than you see in most cities in the Netherlands, many buildings are made of marl, yellow stones from the caves in the vicinity of the city. The city has a very historic feel and that is partly due to these marl buildings. You could hardly tell that Valkenburg is a fortified city, but these days the municipality has corrected it, you can read more about this under the heading Cultural heritage.

The castle ruins on the hill is already one thing that makes you feel historic. Just like the cozy historic square next to the Oude Kerk, with the well and Den Halder castle, which used to be a fortress tower, but has become a castle-like house over the years. Not to mention the well-known Geul that flows through the city, it also gives the historic feeling with the marl quays.

In addition to the existing Berkelpoort, the Grendelpoort has been expanded again with two towers and the Geulpoort has even been rebuilt from the ground up and are ready since the end of 2014. This gives the city a real fortified character again, this character had largely disappeared due to the lack of the gates, almost the entire wall and the moat. The fortress moat will also be partly rebuilt, along the remaining western city wall, next to castle den Halder
