![]() The Jacob Cramerplein in Assen Assen is the capital of the province of Drenthe, Assen is a nice cozy city but at the same time the city is a bit small, it has about 67.000 inhabitants. Assen is a very green city, the city has a number of cozy terraces and you can enjoy shopping here. | |||||||||||||

![]() The Drents Museum in Assen In the year 1258 there was a large nunnery in Assen, called: “Sancta Marria de Campe” or “Mariënkamp”. This has been moved from Coevorden to a thinking sand ridge, where the center of Assen is now located. In various streets you can still recognize something, for example the Oostersingel, Noordersingel and there is also something to see on the Zuidersingel. This monastery was unfortunately closed in 1602. The city has 139 national monuments, Assen is one of the youngest cities in the Netherlands with city rights, Assen only received it in 1809. This was done by Lodewijk Napoleon. Assen is now the fastest growing city in the Northern Netherlands. | |||||||||||||

![]() The new Kolk in Assen Culture is also indispensable in Assen, the De Nieuwe Kolk building houses a cinema and a theater. ![]() Old house in Assen As mentioned before, Assen is a very green city. The city is located near a beautiful nature reserve called the Drentse Aa. Assen is surrounded by beautiful forests. In Assen you also have beautiful parks, such as the Baggelhuizen parks or the Pittelo park. You can also take a look in the Asserbos. Near Assen is the Balloerveld area, which is a large sandy plain with heathland. In the past, the site was used as a military training ground. | |||||||||||||
