Nijmegen is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands.

The history goes back to the Roman Empire, Nijmegen was part of the Limes, this was the border between the Roman Empire and the Germanic areas. Nijmegen fell under the 10th Legion, this was from the year 71 to the year 104. During the Roman rule a large fortress was built on the hill at the current Waal, here are still a few remnants to see. In the 3rd century, the Romans abandoned the fortress. (This has not yet been proven)

Nijmegen was besieged several times during the Eighty Years' War. In the year 1672 the city was occupied by the French, this lasted until the year 1674. In the year 1678 peace returned to Nijmegen, when the peace treaty was signed, this hot Peace of Nijmegen

Nijmegen suffered a lot in the Second World War. In the year 1944, the Americans carried out a bombardment on Nijmegen, this was an error of judgment by the Americans, because it was not done on purpose. The Allies thought they had bombed a German city, the target was Kleve

There are many places of interest in Nijmegen, the center of Nijmegen is full of monuments. The must-see tourist attraction is the Valkhof Park, the park is located on a hill where you have a beautiful view over the Waal. There are several monuments in the Valkhof Park, including the Chapel of St. Nicholas and the Babarossa ruins, which were rebuilt in 1155 by Frederik Barbarossa.

As mentioned before, there are also plenty of tourist monuments to see in the center, a number of examples are the Sint-Stevenskerk, which was built in the 16th century, another building that attracts tourists is the Waag, this building is said to have been built in 1612/1613 Finally, tourists like to visit the Powder Tower and the remains of the city walls.

Nijmegen can call itself a great shopping city, Nijmegen has a lot to offer in terms of shops. You can find everything in Nijmegen, there are many private shops but also large chain stores. The city of Nijmegen has many shopping streets. The two largest of these are the Lange Hezelstraat, the Broerstraat. The Lange Hezelstraat is also the oldest shopping street in the Netherlands.

Nijmegen is surrounded by greenery and has a number of parks, west from the center is the Kronenbuger Park.

East of the center are the parks Het Valkhoff & Hunnerpark.

In the northeast you can find the Ooijpolder.

This south from the center you will find the Julliana Park.

Other parks include Goffertpark, Brakenstein and finally the Groesbeekse Bos is worth a visit.
