Maastricht is a city south of our country in the province of Limburg, with a population of more than 120.000 it is also the capital of the province of Limburg. Maastricht has a rich history, which starts in Prehistory (about 35.000 BC), then goes on to Roman times (50 BC), the Middle Ages (450 to 1500), early modern times (1500 to 1794) to the French era (1794 to 1814) and the modern era (1814 to 1945)

If you like cultural heritage, you can enjoy yourself in Maastricht. This is partly because Maastricht is probably the oldest city in the Netherlands. the 1st city wall of Maastricht is still visible

What you cannot avoid is the red tower of the Sint-Janskerk, which stands out above it with the St. Servaas Basilica next to it. The St. Servaas Basilica stands out because it has a tower on all 4 corners. Both monuments are located on the Vrijthof, a large square in Maastricht (see the image under culture!). The town hall can be found on the Market, which you should not forget, you can see it in the image under the shopping heading below. Furthermore, if you continue on from the market, you can walk towards the Maas and have a look at the oldest stone bridge in the Netherlands, the Sint-Servaas Bridge.

What you should also not avoid are the fortifications of Maastricht, along the Maasboulevard near De Hoge Brug (for cyclists and pedestrians) you will find the oldest city wall in the Netherlands with the Helpoort attached to it, which is also the oldest existing city gate in the Netherlands ( you can see it in the photo in this frame). You can continue through the city park and admire many pieces of wall with gates. You can also find old watermills from the city park towards the center.

In the Hoge Fronten park you will also find parts of old fortifications.
