Coevorden Castle

Coevorden is a fortified city in the province of Drenthe, the city is the oldest city in Drenthe and therefore has a rich history. The star-shaped outer canal and the roads in the city center clearly show that Coevorden is a fortified city. When you discover the city, you notice that the city is committed to water, history and conviviality. This makes Coevorden very suitable for a tourist visit. The city is also called goose town, because of the goose market which is held every year on the second Monday of November.

Coevorden has a rich historical background and therefore you can still find plenty of historic buildings and at least enjoy the atmosphere. In the past, Drenthe was very swampy and difficult to reach. Coevorden was located on one of the inaccessible roads in the area, on a sand hill, between the swamps. This made Coevorden an important city, the Utrecht bishop, Karel van Gelre and Prince Maurits also interfered with Coevorden. The city also belonged to the defense line along the Dutch-German border.

In the city you will find a beautiful building, Het Arsenaal, which currently houses the museum. An Arsenal used to store items for the war (weapons). In the cozy city center you will also find the castle of Coevorden, in this beautiful building a hotel is located. The castle of Coevorden is also the symbol on the Drenthe flag.

Shopping is best in the Friesestraat, the Bentheimerstraat and of course in the covered shopping center Gansehof that borders the Friesestraat. In Coevorden you can shop all kinds of things, clothing, shoes, accessories and all kinds of other necessities. A little more than 24 kilometers to the north you can also enter Emmen shopping, there you can shop more extensively.

In the city center, where the city walls used to be, is the Van Heutszpark and a little east of the city you can still relax in the Huttenheugte. To the south towards Ommen there is plenty of nature and you can enjoy the beautiful nature for a very long time.
