![]() The Nieuwland Bridge in Alkmaar Alkmaar is certainly a city with a lot of history, the city received its city rights in the year (1254), which was granted by Count Willem II. the city is known as a real cheese city. This cheese market was already there around the year (1365) and in the year (1593) the cheese guild was founded. Alkmaar was located on the east side of Kennermerland and was separated from West Friesland by the river Rekere. The city serves as a border fortress and base in the fight against the West Frisians. In the 16th century around the year 1509 the building of the town hall was started, this was only completed in 1520. the year (1517) the city's heyday was over. this was because the city was attacked by the "Armumer Zwarte Hoop" this was a Frisian rebel army also called "De Gelderland Frisians" . further in the 17th century Alkmaar developed into a center of trade and care. In the 19th century, King Willem I had a canal dug, this canal went right through Alkmaar. This meant that part of the city walls had to be demolished. | |||||||||||||
