Zuidhavenpoort in Zierikzee from the 14th century Zierikzee is a very pleasant and old monument city and fortified city, because the city has many monuments for its size. The city is old and was already mentioned in the year 976 under the name Creka and in the year 1248 King Willem II wrote city rights for Zierikzee. In the years 1303 and 1304 Zierikzee was besieged several times by Flemish troops, which worked under the leadership of Guy van Namen. The Flemish never succeeded in taking over Zierikzee and were defeated in the Battle of Zierikzee. | |||||||||||||

Sint-Lievensmonstertower in Zierikzee Zierikzee is an old fortified town with many historical monuments. If you like old (fortified) cities, Zierikzee is a must. The city has had five major city fires, but fortunately the city is still very old, cozy and gives a historic feeling. In the year 1414 about half of the city burned down in a fire and in 1458 the main part of the city went up in flames. More recently, in the First World War, a lost pilot from Great Britain threw six bombs at Zierikzee. These bombs were actually intended for the seaside resort of Zeebrugge in Belgium. | |||||||||||||

The New Church of Zierikzee Zierikzee has many monuments, as mentioned before. The most important ones are explained here, the old town hall of Zierikzee is beautiful, as well as the Sint-Lievensmonstertoren (popularly called the thick tower) and the Templar House. In addition to these beautiful monuments, there are three beautiful gates of the fortifications, namely the Zuidhavenpoort, the Noorderhavenpoort and the Nobelpoort. | |||||||||||||

The Havenplein in Zierikzee In Zierikzee you can choose clothes and purchase the minimum necessities. Zierikzee is not suitable for extensive shopping, you can deviate a little bit to the city of Goes (+/- 25KM) where shopping is complete. | |||||||||||||

The old Town Hall of Zierikzee In Zierikzee you can visit one of the museums, climb the “Dikketoren” or watch a movie in the movie theater.

The Kraanplein in Zierikzee You can walk along some greenery around the city center along the canal, but otherwise you don't have to travel to Zierikzee for parks and nature. If you want to enjoy nature, you can still travel to Burgh-Haamstede, which is about 17 kilometers west of the city of Zierikzee. | |||||||||||||

The Apple Market in Zierikzee Zierikzee has a number of cafes, you can have a nice evening there, but it is not really nice going out. If you want to go out, you can go in Goes, about 25 kilometers south of the city. | |||||||||||||
