Hotel Spaander in Volendam Volendam actually owes its origin to the city Edam. Originated on the spot where two rivers entered the Zuiderzee. The inhabitants of Edam started digging a water connection between the Purmermeer and the Zuiderzee in 1357. As a result, the old harbor of Edam was closed with a dam. Farmers and especially fishermen moved here and this is how Follendam, now Volendam, was created. Despite the fact that the village only has 3 national monuments, the village manages to attract millions of tourists, including busloads full from Amsterdam, the tourists come to Volendam and the surrounding area. This is due to the atmosphere of the village, walking on the dike, on the one side the fishing boats and on the other side the souvenir shops, bars, restaurants. Many tourists also have a photo taken here in original Volendam costume. And when you get off the dike, you soon find yourself in the maze between the typical historic Volendam houses. There is no clear structure in the roads, hence it looks like a maze. By driving a bit over the dike or taking the boat you can also reach the historic village of Marken in no time. This village has a similar atmosphere, but slightly small | |||||||||||||
