The first mention of Vlissingen dates from the year 1235. At that time Vlissingen was a small hamlet Floris V (Count of Holland) played a major role in the creation of a new Vlissingen. Between the years 1558 and 1572 it belonged to the Spaniards. In the years 1585 to 1616 the city fell under the Kingdom of England. In short, Vlissingen has often been part of other countries. The famous Admiral de Ruyter was also born here in the year (1676). This man is often referred to as a naval hero.
