Middelburg's Fish Market Middelburg is a cosy, old, touristic city and the capital of the province of Zeeland. The city dates back to the 9th century, once started as a so-called ring walburg. This ringwalburg had to protect Walcheren against the Vikings. A rangwalburg is a burg surrounded by a round wall with a moat around it, people could flee to this in case of danger. This burg was the middle burg of Zeeland, hence the name Middelburg. Middelburg is a bustling tourist city where you can do a lot to make a successful city trip.

The historic Kuiperspoort in Middelburg Middelburg is a pleasant historic city that originated in the 9th century at a ring walburg (as discussed above in the general story). Middelburg used to be an important trading city, during the Dutch East India Company (VOC, 1602 to 1799) Middelburg was Amsterdam after the main port city. In the Second World War, Middelburg also suffered a lot of damage due to a bombardment, in particular a large part of the city center was destroyed by fire. This destruction was comparable to Rotterdam, but because repairs were started immediately during the war, the city has remained very beautiful and historic. The beautiful town hall, among other things, was destroyed, but it has been beautifully restored (see top photo).
