The West Frisian Museum in Hoorn

Do you want to visit a pleasant city? Then Hoorn should not be missed, Hoorn is a tourist town with a lot to do. Hoorn is a city where there is everything, there is a lot of heritage, there are many shops and there is also a lot of culture! There is also plenty of greenery.

Hoorn is located in the province of North Holland and has more than 71.000 inhabitants and 420 national monuments.

The city used to be a very important trading city and used to be located on the Zuiderzee. There is still a lot of history to see in the city.

The Oosterkerk of Hoorn

Hoorn also has history and quite a lot. In the Golden Age Hoorn was a prosperous city, also a very important city. The ships of the city sailed on the world's seas, the fishermen had full nets. If you now walk around in Hoorn you can still see many buildings that date from the Golden Age, in the year 1316 people were already wounding in Hoorn. These inhabitants then lived from the fisheries. In the year 1356 Hoorn buys its city rights, then the rights were issued by Count Willem V. In the 18th century Hoorn was very rich, but later in the 18th century Hoorn sank and there is a lot of poverty.

The city has also known a time where many buildings have been lost, the beautiful Grote Kerk on Kerkplein also went up in flames. Another church was immediately built, but it was not nearly as beautiful. Furthermore, some city gates were demolished, the reason for this is that they felt that the gates were in the way of traffic.

After the Second World War, a new period of prosperity begins for Hoorn, the Zuiderzee becomes the IJsselmeer and Hoorn will then be rid of their seaport. In the 2nd half of the 19th century, the city became known for its flower bulb fields, which are now known worldwide.

Back in Hoorn

The city of Hoorn has many sights, which you would expect from a city of 420 national monuments. The most important monuments that you must have seen are the Hoofdtoren, the Oosterpoort, De Mariatoren (also known as the powder tower) and De Waag. Which are also beautiful sights are De Oosterkerk, the West Frisian Museum, the Boterhal and the Grote Kerk. For these and more sights you should really pay a visit to Hoorn.

Hoorn is also the place to be for lots of shopping fun, as there are many shops. You will find large retail chains, but also small private stores are certainly present. The shopping streets are nicely decorated and make the shopping day complete.

Some shopping streets include; “De Nieuwesteeg, De Kruisstraat, Geldersteeg, Molsteeg and finally Het Grote Noord.

As mentioned before, Hoorn has a lot of greenery, there are many parks in the city where you can enjoy and relax. You can possibly enjoy the Risdammerhout, visit Julliana Park, the Mandala Park and finally you can visit the Wilhelmina Plantsoen. There are also a number of other parks, in short, plenty to do for nature lovers.
