The Vennestraat in Geertruidenberg Geertruidenberg got its name after Gertrudis van Nivelles (early medieval saint and abbess), who is said to have built a monastery on a “Berg” (hill) in the 7th century. However, no traces of this have been found. Geertruidenberg always belonged to Holland (current provinces of North Holland and South Holland) and was the first place of Holland that received city rights, it became a city in 1213. In the Middle Ages, Geertruidenberg was a good trading town, partly thanks to the Saint Elizabeth flood in 1421, this good trading function of the city came to an end. The Sint-Elisabeth flood is a well-known flood that took place in the year 1421. It was only around the time the Kingdom of the Netherlands was formed in 1813 that the city became part of the province of North Brabant. The fortifications of Geertruidenberg were modernized in the 16th and 17th centuries, the city was given a place in the Zuidwaterlinie designed by Menno van Coehoorn. This line runs from Sluis to Nijmegen and had to be able to stop an advance of the French. Various bastions and a number of buildings such as the Arsenaal, the Kruitmagazijn (also known as cachot) and the garrison bakery (Bakery for soldiers) still remind us of Geertruidenberg's wartime past.

The Market in Geertruidenberg The market in particular is very worth seeing and the city has a protected cityscape. The church on the market is a beautiful monument as well as the town hall, the museum and the fish market next to the church should not be missed. The only thing that is a bit of a shame is that from the market you have a view of a large cooling tower of the Amercentrale.
