Summary of Eindhoven

The Market in Eindhoven
The Market in Eindhoven

Eindhoven in North Brabant was originally a small fortified city on the Bommel, but nowadays a modern large student city.

Eindhoven is also called the city of light of the Netherlands, this is due to the match factory that settled in the city around 1870. The company grew quickly and in 1880 the second factory was built, so that matches were soon produced for the whole world. In 1891, a factory for light bulbs started in Eindhoven, which did not give rise to the name “City of Lights”, but undoubtedly reinforced it.

A well-known slogan for the city is “Eindhoven the craziest!”, which was created by a PSV supporter. Eindhoven is now a vibrant modern city, which has everything to offer that you can expect from a large city.

Interesting history of Eindhoven

Eindhoven originated around the year 1100 at the end of a sand ridge near Woensel. At the end of the sand ridge a Burcht was built (farm), probably named Eindhoven (Einde (sand ridge) and Hoeve). In 1232 a city was founded with city rights and a walled fortified city was created.

We will leave the fortified city aside for now, since through the wars, apart from a number of buildings, little of this history has remained of the history of the city. You can still see the historic shape of the fortress in the important arteries (roads and paths). You can also admire the remains of the Woenselse gate in the bicycle cellar under 18 Septemberplein.

In short, you come to Eindhoven to experience everything and to enjoy the modern architecture. For cultural heritage you could skip Eindhoven
