Appingedam is a small but pleasant town in the northeast of the province of Groningen. The city does not have that many inhabitants, the number is about 12.000. The inhabitants of Appingedam are called a Damster or simply an Appingedammer. This town is definitely worth a visit for old building enthusiasts.

Appingedam Town Hall

During the summer, Appingedam has the annual Damster Stadsfeesten, which start in June with a funfair and a large-scale music event, the Night of Appingedam. Some other city festivals are the Custom Chopper Day, the (medieval) Coopluydenmarkt, the Art and Culture Day and the Gondelvaart. The city festivities are concluded in September with Damsterdag with two parades with floats, the so-called paper parade. Unlike the more famous flower parades, the carriages here are not decorated with flowers, but all parts are covered with thousands of colorful paper roses, made from crepe paper.
