Groningen Central Station On the Grote Markt is still the most important monument of the city, the Martinitoren (97M) with accompanying Martinikerk. A short distance from the Martinitoren is another beautiful large church with a high tower (76M), this is the Aa Church. If you wander a little further from the center towards the central station, there is still a beautiful old church to admire, the Saint Joseph cathedral. The tower of this cathedral is also called the drunken man's tower because two bells can be seen from each side of the tower. If you didn't come from the central station, you should also visit the station, because this is one of the most beautiful train stations in Europe. In addition to the churches, there are of course many more beautiful buildings to admire in the city, when you are on the Grote Markt you walk to the back of the Martinikerk and there you can see the beautiful old provincial house of the province of Groningen. It is also definitely worth walking from the Grote Markt to behind the V&D, where you can see a beautiful old building of the University of Groningen (RUG). Around the area of the RUG there are many more old buildings, outside the center (towards the north) there is another church (the new church) and in the surrounding area you can also admire a lot of old buildings. No fewer than 31 courtyards/guest houses are hidden throughout the city, these are very nice to take a look. | |||||||||||||
